Abstract

This study explores the role of Omani school principals in promoting global citizenship education (GCED), and the challenges they face integrating it into the school environment to achieve sustainable development. Eight principals in Oman participated in in-depth interviews. The findings revealed that the principals find the concept of GCED vague. Although they promote GCED values, they do so unintentionally. They emphasised that their leadership activities and roles include implementing GCED to make the school environment safe and appropriate for transforming learners into global citizens. In addition, their roles in promoting GCED extend beyond the specific responsibilities articulated by policies and regulations.
