Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the attitudes of undergraduate students at Sultan Qaboos University in using the correct forms of Arabic in social medial platforms: Instagram and (X). The problem of the study lies in the fact that although social media platforms contribute to enhancing communication between students, and benefiting them cognitively from their peers, it poses a threat on their linguistic capabilities due to deviation from the correct forms of Arabic and the usage of erroneous forms. To achieve the aim of the study, the researchers developed a questionnaire of (25) statements distributed on a random sample of 198 male and female undergraduate students from all the colleges. The results showed a preference for Instagram among SQU students as 83.8% of students utilized Instagram compared to 16.2% for (X). In addition, 39.4% of the students preferred using the colloquial dialect and the mixed (Arabizi) instead of correct Arabic on (X( and Instagram due to peers negative reaction, and lack of minimal grammar rules. The study recommends raising undergraduates’ awareness at SQU on maintaining a sound linguistic identity and conducting linguistic competitions in non-academic activities in order to enable the students maintain their correct linguistic level
