Abstract
The article at hand is supported by field data from Shendi Province, which could be described as a miniature representation of at least Northern Sudan. It sheds light upon the position of non-Muslims in Islamic state as perceived by different Muslim groups in that province. It looks in depth at the ways in which these Muslim groups view and interact with non-Muslims. Attempts are made to relate the behaviour of Muslims to non-Muslims to the ways these groups understand and interpret the Islamic texts. It also addresses the issue of religion and national constitution and the position of non-Muslims when a Muslim group is the real political force behind the state government.
