Abstract

Surface plasmon excitations constitute a promising alternative for wave guiding schemes. The strengths of the evanescent fields in the case of plasmonic waveguides are enhanced and result in strong resonances in comparison with pure waveguide modes. Some basic aspects of surface plasmon excitations in metal-dielectric-metal light waveguides are discussed The propagation lengths and lateral confinement with and without a gain medium are particularly addressed.
