This study aims to identify the nature and prospects of the use of social networks in the National Records and Archives Authority in the Sultanate of Oman (NRAA), and the challenges they face in managing their social platforms. In addition, the study intended to learn about the social media usage features that NRAA use on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
The study adopted a descriptive approach to analyze data gathered from a case study using two data gathering tools: a checklist and semi-structured interviews. The sample of the study included: first, three employees responsible for managing and operating the social platforms of NRAA, and second, eight managers of specialized departments in NRAA or their representatives. The study also used the method of content analysis to analyze the features of the social platforms of NRAA in the Sultanate of Oman.
The study found out that NRAA is interested in using social networks to communicate with the users and improve the services provided to them. In addition, it tends to use Facebook and Twitter to share its content. Most of the posts focused on the events and activities NRAA carried out or participated in. The most prominent challenges were lack of written policy and guidelines to regulate the use of social media networks. In addition, the large number of tasks required from those responsible for managing and operating these social platforms, was found to be another challenge. Finally, the most prominent recommendations are the importance of adopting a clear and written policy and goals to benefit from social media networks, while paying more attention to Twitter as it showed to have the largest number of users of NRAA’s social platforms.
