Modified Silica with chitosan as new chiral stationary phase for chiral amino acids resolution

Project: Internal Grants (IG)

Project Details

Description

Due to the shortage of freshwater resources in Oman, water treatment is becoming very important as a method to cover some of the fresh water shortage to be utilized in irrigation and industry. Organic pollutants and heavy metal contamination are considered to be direct threat to the environment and human health. Moreover, resolution of racemic organic compounds continue to receive much attention in recent years due to the high applications for enantio-pure organic compounds in pharmaceutical and organic industries. In this research, insoluble chitosan-silica polymer will be prepared. The newly prepared modified polymer is expected to show high ability to remove heavy metals and organic compounds from wastewater and a potential for resolution of racemic amino acids using HPLC. Sorption studies will be also investigated in batch and dynamic modes with recyclability tests for reuse.
