Description

The Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS) is a tectonic collage of late-Neoproterozoic (ca. 850 to 600 Ma) island arc terranes, representing the northward extension of the East African Orogen, which formed during final amalgamation of East and West Gondwana generating the Gondwana supercontinent. In the Arabian Shield part of the ANS, the western arc terranes, which are primarily exposed in the west of Saudi Arabia and Yemen, were formed and assembled at ca. 800-700 Ma, while the eastern arc terranes are somewhat younger at ca. 740-620 Ma. These eastern exposures occur in Oman, in the Salalah-Marbat area, Jebel Jaalan, Joba, Qalhat, and the Hallanyat islands. In this study, we will carry out geochronological and geochemical work on the rocks of the Hallanyat islands in order to define the isotope character and geochemical signature of the Neoproterozoic rocks exposed to better understand the assembly of the Arabian plate within the ANS context.
