N2 - Metabolomics is a branch of science that sheds light on identifying different metabolite(s) present in a biological sample. While multi-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a method of choice for the structural characterization of small to complex compounds, modern science has seen an upsurge in using state-of-the-art hyphenated techniques. Hyphenated 1D-and 2D-NMR, among others, offer multiple advantages, including rapid detection with high accuracy and sensitivity. Hyphenated techniques are beneficial for identifying natural product metabolites, monitoring human metabolism, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics. This chapter sheds light on NMR-based metabolomics and hyphenated NMR techniques for isolating and identifying bioactive compounds from natural sources. Hopefully, this chapter offers the reader a sense of possibilities for applying NMR-based metabolomics and hyphenated NMR techniques in ethnopharmacology and inspire them to use these technologies in their study.
