N1 - Funding Information: Dr Rtimi is a photochemist with a strong background in microbiology and materials science. He was awarded a PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) and a PhD in Biological Sciences (Environmental microbiology) from the University of Carthage. He is investigating the structure-reactivity of photocatalytic ultra-thin films for microbial inactivation at the solid–air and the solid–liquid interfaces. He is editor at Environmental Science and Pollution Research journal, guest-edited some special issues in prestigious journals in environmental engineering and edited several books. During his career he received the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship, won the AIT-Swissnex fellowship, was awarded the ScienceFather excellence award on research inventions and the outstanding research award on Photocatalysis. He participated in several research projects and served as expert for many funding agencies in Switzerland and worldwide.
