ملخص

The present study aims at investigating the degree of conceptual consistency between Islamic education programs in the secondary stage and Friday prayer sermons. It also aims at identifying Islamic education teachers and secondary school students’ rating of the degree to which students benefit from this sermon. The study poses answers to six questions. The first two questions aimed at identifying the degree of consistency using content analysis of a sample consisting of (203) lessons and (204) sermons. The other questions focus on teachers and learners ratings using two versions of a questionnaire consisting of (20) statements. The questionnaire was administered to (109) teachers and (592) students. The major findings of this study are: -Conceptual consistency between the programs and the sermons amounted to (41%). -The highest percentage (39%) of conceptual consistency was in the first year secondary and the lowest (18%) was in the third year secondary. -Teachers’ rating of the degree to which those sermons are beneficial to their students ranged between (71.2%) and (87.6%). There was no statistically significant difference that could be attributed to the grade taught by teachers or teaching experience. -Students rating of the benefit of the sermons ranged between (67%) and (87%). No statistically significant differences could be attributed to student grade. Given these findings, co-ordination between curriculum designers and those entrusted with preparing those sermons is highly recommended. Teachers need to draw students attention to give due care to listening to these sermons. Finally, the topics of these sermons should be varied to have a beneficial washback effect on Islamic education programs. Also the study recommended more research work on different school stages, and in other countries.
