The present paper takes stock of the anthropological research in Oman, centering on a package of studies conducted by two American anthropologists: Dawn Chatty and Mandana Lambert. Working on these studies helps in tracking the main features of American anthropology as practiced the Third World in general, and the Middle East in particular. These studies were modeled after the American anthropology, oriented toward cultural and practical issues in areas like health, administration and economic development. They date back to the 1990s and reflect the moment in which they were written and the researchers’ preoccupations with the phenomena that caught their attention. Therefore, the topics pursued had their presence in a society that was in the process of transformation or on its path to development after Sultan Sultan Qaboos bin Said came to the throne in 1970.
