الدور المتوقع للأبحاث الأنثروبولوجية في حقل التنمية في السودان: قراءة في رؤى إيان كنيسون (Ian G. Cunnison)

The paper at hand addresses the views of the anthropologist "Ian George Cunnison" on the expected role of social anthropology in the economic development in Sudan and other developing countries and on the relationship between anthropologists and administrators in this regard. These views are highlighted in three articles he wrote during his tenure as member of the academic staff at the University of Khartoum. The paper is a reading of these articles. It also uses Cunnison's links to other Sudanist anthropologists and his academic biography, research experience (inside and outside Sudan), and theoretical interests in understanding the views tracked in these articles. The paper considers Cunnison as one of the professional anthropological researchers who were part of a process of utilization of anthropology for governance purposes, which began in Sudan in 1909 in the form of invitations by the colonial government to these researchers to conduct ethnographic research on some tribal groups. The paper shows how the pattern of professional anthropological research, which prevailed in that period, changed with the arrival of Cunnison to Sudan and thus detects main turning points in the development of anthropological research in Sudan.
