Factors that determine entrepreneurial intention and propensity of students: Case study from Oman

The Sultanate of Oman has drawn an ambitious long-term plan under the Oman Vision 2040 that envisages creating a friendly business environment for all. In this context, Dana et al (2021) and his associates observed that Oman has potential to diversify its economy in many sectors (p.171), which will be along the same line as its vison 2040. It also has been suggested that, besides other crucial drivers, education and entrepreneurial readiness through higher education is of a great importance (Dana et al., 2021). Therefore, one of the key drivers leading towards implementation of Oman Vision 2040 lies in quality of educational programs especially though universities. Although the Government of Oman has put a great emphasis on the development of entrepreneurial culture through higher education and other different educational programs, still many graduates are into securing their incomes through governmental jobs. Perhaps, better quality entrepreneurial education at university level is necessary to change the current laggard mindset into entrepreneurial one. Yet, when it is accompanying with the government support, which exists for years, it will help the vision to be implemented successfully. Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in this area of education works a lot, makes industrial relations and put a great emphasis on innovative ideas. The university has been ranked as the leading higher education institution in Oman, which can provide quality education and prepare new generations to contribute to socio-economic development via entrepreneurial activities throughout the country. However, in this context, still no substantial highlights that will lead to conclusion that the current programs are being enough to develop entrepreneurial mindset of SQU graduates. Led by this premise, this research aims to explore in depth realities on the ground and tries to come up with recommendations that will enhance and develop entrepreneurial mindset of SQU graduates.
