Description

Strokes are the second major cause of mortality across the world and are the first reason for disability. andldquo; If precautions are taken at the right time, 70 to 80 per cent of the cases can be avoided.andrdquo; According to the latest WHO data published in April 2011 Stroke deaths in Oman reached 500 or 6.33% of total deaths. The age adjusted death rate is 51.54/100,000 of population, which occupies fourth position in the country. In various studies carried out in Omani population, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, sedentary occupations and smoking have been reported to be the major risk factors of stroke. The contribution of vascular risk factors of stroke in Omani population has not been evaluated systematically. Main Goal of the Study: Identification and to quantify the degree and extent of association between various risk factors and their interaction in the development of Stroke in terms risk ratios under univariate and multivariate set up based on a case-control design and to device a risk scoring system for prediction of stroke, which may be used for early detection of individuals at higher risk of stroke. Expected Outcome: Establish a biochemical profile and lifestyle characteristics baseline data for early diagnosis and screening of high risk individualsusing a risk scoring systemfor developing Stroke among Omani population.
