Description

Carbon dioxide capture is a challenging issue for the oil, gas and chemical industries. The current conventional amine based CO2 capture methods are costly and their use entails many environmental concerns. Scientific community needs to explore new techniques to successfully remove CO2 from oil field gases in local, regional and global scales. CO2 removal using nonconventional green solvents has a great potential of reducing CO2 emission and hence reducing CO2 pollution related problems. Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) represent a potential alternative to replace conventional solvent used for CO2 capture. They are relatively new family of green solvents compared with the room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) that are hitherto better studied. More research work is being conducted by many researchers to shed more light on the properties of DESs, their solubility and selectivity towards acidic gases such as CO2, NOx, and SOx. This proposal attempts to develop novel DESs, study the CO2 solubility in these DESs and determine optimum operating parameters to maximize the CO2 solubility in these DESs. Designing an effective, environmentally viable CO2 sequestration technology will be a significant contribution to the oil and gas industry in Oman.
