Translation and Linguistics

Course

Description

This MA course focuses on the relationship between linguistics and translation and the linguistic approaches to Translation Studies. Students examine the sometimes strained relationship between linguistics and translation and critically assess the contributions that linguists from different linguistic paradigms have made to Translation Studies while recognising the limitations of many of their approaches. Particular attention is paid to the role of semantics, text structure and text function in translation and also to the troublesome notion of equivalence. The course emphasises the role of Functional Systemic Linguistics to Translation Studies in the study of translation relevant issues such as ideology of translation and translation of ideology. Students are also introduced to relevant fields of linguistics such as corpus linguistics and computational linguistics.
