Introduction to Probability

Course

Description

Despite the fact that we estimate probabilities and make judgment for specific events in our daily lives, we lack the theoretical knowledge of probability. In this course, the student will learn the main concepts of probability and probability distributions. They will develop the ability to extract useful information from the data and employ them to draw reasonable analytical results, and to be confident in making recommendations specifically in the face of uncertainty.

The course is concerned with the theory and applications of probability as a model of reality. The student will learn to suggest a theoretical distribution for populations and develop a theory of probability in a precise mathematical manner. The net result will develop a theoretical and mathematical model for acquiring and utilizing information in real life. Like other theories, its utility should be gauged by its ability to assist us in understanding nature and in solving problems in the real world. Whether we are assessing how the likelihood a car price drops with time; counting the number of defective items produced per day in a manufactory; predicting the time until the next earthquake; or exploring the relationship between the number of hours devoted for study every day and the grade of the course, probability theory can be used to provide insight into many areas of our daily lives (R. L. Scheaffer and L. J. Young. 2010).

The course will implement some active learning strategies to support student learning and to develop their soft skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. The student will be able to implement their gained knowledge in mathematics and statistics in this course, in addition will be able to link the course material to real life problems.
