N2 - Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) can be considered as the latest regression of lab-on-a-chip devices and have attracted the attention of many researchers. Recently, noteworthy progress has been made in various fields regarding the introduction of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Due to the intrinsic advantages of both PADs and MOFs, there has been a rapid growth in their fields confirmed by the large number of publications and citations. The integration of various MOFs within PADs is anticipated to fabricate state-of-the-art devices for several applications in a wide range of fields. This manuscript aims to review the recent 5 years of published studies based on the coupling of MOFs on PADs, outlining their potential application in different fields. Furthermore, challenges and obstacles as well as prospects related to this combination have been discussed.
