Abstract
Wa'adat or social contract in Malay History represents a significant element in traditional Malay political culture. This agreement has left a strong impact on the Malay political arena, before, during, and in the post-independence era which is the main focus of this study. It is not only strong Malay rulers or governors who built Malay political culture; colonial actions were also important for understanding the development of Malay political culture in this country. Although Malays have experienced various changes, their elements of obedience, loyalty, devotion, and submissive nature toward the ruler and local leaders have never changed. The interweaving of traditional elements mixed with customs and religion has traversed the process of modernization alongside the development of Malay political culture. Therefore, the impact of colonial construction on Malay society's politics, whether consciously or unconsciously, has impacted a transformation of political culture from obedience to Malay rulers shifting to the British colonial powers and then to non-aristocratic Malay leaders. The presence of human instinct and the necessity for the existence of a leader or natural obedience that already exists in their souls is the main cause of the continuation of this submissive culture. The approach of the natural obedience concept is also applied in discussing the issue of Malay obedience toward government that emerges naturally according to instinct or the habitual nature of an individual.
