My major research interest is on Micronutrients (such as Zinc and Iron) Deficiency  and Epigenetics with a primary focus on Cardiometabolic disorders and other chronic non-communicable diseases (such as Alzheimer's Disease). Dr Murtala started his academic career with Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), Nigeria as a lecturer II in August 2008 and he rose through the ranks to become an Associate Professor of Physiology in 2020. He was subsequently employed by SQU as Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

He has taught Human Physiology to undergraduates for over fifteen (15) years and postgraduates for over seven (7) years and have successfully supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students to completion. He has international collaboration through which he has published over fifty (50) high-ranking, peer-reviewed articles in the areas of physiological genomics and epigenetics . He has also presented several papers as first author at both local and international scientific meetings including in the UK, US and Asia. He has won svereal research grants and have worked in close association with the Grant Management Office (GMO) of UDUS. He has served the University in various administrative capacities (including HOD Physiology, Deputy Dean Student Affairs and Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine). He has also served in various committees as a member, secretary and chairman in curriculum development and accreditation exercise among other assignments.
